The End of Boremula 1

A week ago Sam Fitzpatrick became the Season 3 CDM Boremula 1 World Champion on iRacing, taking the title in his Benetton Playlife at Motegi. Unfortunately though, as per the end of the third season, the championship, in its current form, is being retired.

The series has completed three seasons now - the first, spanning almost an entire year in 2021, with 13 rounds, before seasons 2 and 3 were made much shorter in the interests of driver availability and interest, taking place in 2023 and 2025. The first was based on the liveries of the 1997 Formula One World Championship, while the second and third used 1998 colours. A big thanks must go out to James Leggett / JL Racethetics for doing more than half of the 1997 field for me, in the first place.

Cam Dance arrived on the scene and took the first two titles, rarely being challenged in Season 1, but a new points system made Season 2 a lot more interesting when it came to the championship fight.

His teammate in Season 2, at Williams Mecachrome, was Sam Fitzpatrick, who would eventually go on to win the championship himself in Season 3, ahead of Jesper Eriksson and Jake Cranstone.

In a strange twist, the driver who ended up fastest in pre-season testing, which we used to determine who raced for what team, never finished in the Top 3 in the championship. On a rather amusing flip side, one driver, who ended up having zero luck across all three seasons, Kevin Zwemstra, would end up in the one car he didn't want - the Ferrari - three times in a row.

The car itself, the Star Mazda/Pro Mazda/Formula Mazda, is an old car on iRacing and doesn't have very up-to-date physics, tyres or damage model, so ideally needs to be retired. As the look of this car has been synonymous with Boremula 1 since the start, it's felt that the series cannot move to another machine and format while keeping its identity, so a new formula-car-based series is being derived for later in 2025 under the CDM banner, but it is in no way a branch of Boremula 1.

Thanks to all the sponsors that have helped towards the championship in its lifetime - F1countdown.com, Abruzzi, Sim Racing Magazine, Bottle of Scotch Racing and Derbyshire Holiday Homes. Your support for this crazy little idea means the world.

Same goes for the drivers as well - their co-operation to make the format and the championship in general, work, has been phenomenal. Let's face it, without them, it wouldn't have happened at all.

Cheers to all of the viewers that regularly popped in to keep an eye on the action - I hope we put on a good show for you all and you'll come back to Chaz Draycott Media in whatever series transpires next.

That's all for Boremula 1 - thanks very much for supporting it. Keep an eye out for what's coming up next.
